Upper School

Malden Oaks KS4 is based at the Dukes Centre in Ham.  Students attend KS4 for a variety of reasons, they can be referred by their mainstream school, AFC can send a consultation for one of our named EHCP places or can signpost students who are without a school place. The majority of students who join Malden Oaks at Key Stage 4 stay until the end of year 11, although some do return to mainstream school or move to another specialist placement if it is in their best interests to do so.

Many of our students have previously experienced challenges in accessing education.Through the 4 As; Attachment, Achievement, Altruism and Autonomy, we work to ensure all students are able to leave Key Stage 4 more confident, resilient and with a feeling of purpose and direction as they move on to the Post 16 provision of their choice.

Students are taught in small groups of no more than six by specialist, experienced teachers.  All students study for GCSEs and in addition to this some may take vocational courses. Each student’s timetable is individual to ensure that their needs are met. In addition to examination subjects all students have the opportunity to develop skills and enjoy new activities through the Duke of Edinburgh scheme as well as undertake volunteering in the local community.

The success of Malden Oaks rests firmly on the solid foundations of positive relationships, both between teachers and students and amongst the students. All students complete a minimum of 4  1:1 induction sessions to enable them to gradually settle into their new school and to start building the all important relationships.
